David Montgomery Shines in Detroit Lions' 26-20 Win Over Rams
David Montgomery proved why he's called the Detroit Lions'
"closer." Head coach Dan Campbell praised Montgomery's ability to start and finish games strong, and the running back lived up to those words on Sunday. In the season opener at Ford Field, Montgomery helped lead the Lions to a 26-20 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.
Montgomery's Overtime Heroics
Montgomery played a crucial role in overtime, rushing for 45 yards on five carries. He had a key 21-yard run on the second play, setting the stage for a 1-yard touchdown that sealed the win. This came after the Lions almost lost a 17-3 lead, but they fought back to tie the game with a field goal just 17 seconds before the end of regulation.
Montgomery finished with 91 rushing yards, reminding everyone that he's a key player in the Lions’ offense, even if he's sometimes overlooked.
Jameson Williams Steps Up
Jameson Williams had a breakout game. The third-year wide receiver caught five passes for 121 yards, including a 52-yard touchdown in the third quarter. With the Rams focusing on shutting down Amon-Ra St. Brown, Williams became Jared Goff’s go-to target.
Williams also made a big play with a 36-yard catch in the first half, helping the Lions take a 10-3 lead. His speed and ability to get open made a huge difference in the game, showing he's ready for a big season ahead.
Rookie Terrion Arnold Faces Challenges
Rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold had a tough time in the second half, getting flagged twice for pass interference. Both penalties helped the Rams keep their scoring drives alive. Arnold’s first penalty came when he grabbed Rams receiver Cooper Kupp by the shoulder, and the second occurred in the end zone.
Despite these setbacks, Arnold's performance wasn’t all bad. He'll need to learn how to avoid penalties while still playing aggressively.
Secondary Shows Promise
The Lions' new-look secondary showed potential. Even with a few missed opportunities—like Brian Branch and Carlton Davis III dropping interceptions—the group played well. Davis had a key pass breakup on a fourth-and-3 play, and safety Kerby Joseph snagged an interception in the end zone.
Overall, the secondary looks stronger, thanks to key offseason additions.
Aidan Hutchinson Makes His Mark
Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson had an impressive game with five tackles, four quarterback hits, and a sack on the final play of regulation. Hutchinson’s impact went beyond the stat sheet. He drew two holding penalties when the Rams were at the Detroit 1-yard line, forcing them to settle for a field goal.
Though Hutchinson had one roughing-the-passer penalty, he put constant pressure on Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, proving he’s among the NFL’s top pass rushers. Closer' David Montgomery's clutch finish delivers Detroit Lions' 26-20 victory over Rams
